Gracie Fields was born over a fish and chip shop owned by her grandmother in Molesworth Street, Rochdale<\/p><\/div>\n

It\u2019s not a place I\u2019ve ever had cause to visit, Rochdale. It\u2019s somewhere people tend to come from, not go to.<\/p>\n

From Gracie Fields, the Thirties music hall star, \u00a0to Andy Kerhsaw, the aberrant DJ, the place is more famed for its exports than its indigenous culture. This is a town whose football team have never played above the third tier of the English league.<\/p>\n

When you arrive official signs pronounce: \u201cRochdale – it\u2019s happening\u201d. But you could have been forgiven for feeling otherwise.<\/p>\n

Not any more. For this is the ordinary place where an ordinary grandmother left her ordinary home \u2013 mid-terraced, ivy-clad, with wind chimes from Minorca \u2013 and created what could turn out to be the pivotal moment of the 2010 election campaign, dealing a grave blow to Gordon Brown just as he hoped to be on the point of rallying to return to Downing St.<\/p>\n

Gillian Duffy went out to buy a loaf of bread \u2013 and returned home having done great damage to the political career of the prime minister, having raised concerns about immigration from Eastern Europe and been branded by the Labour leader, a forgotten microphone disclosed, as a \u201cbigoted woman\u201d.<\/p>\n

The locals are proud of her achievement. \u201cShe asked perfectly valid questions,\u201d said John Sutton. \u201cShe was honest, upfront and to the point.\u201d \u201cIf she\u2019s a bigot, so am I,\u201d said another Rochdale resident. \u201cMrs Duffy is a hero of the election, said Mr D Ashworth.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the blogsite of the Rochdale<\/em> Observer<\/em> a woman from the other side of the town came forward to support her. \u201cAlmost every time I visit a Post Office, or a cash dispenser I am badgered by Eastern European women carrying babies, begging for money and thrusting hand-written notes under my nose claiming they are homeless and without food,\u201d one woman wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is becoming tiresome, but however impoverished they are, the same people can be seen in the local cafe some hours later, using mobile phones and smoking cigarettes. They are beggars – plain and simple. They also happen to be Eastern Europeans. Perhaps that is the root of Mrs. Duffy\u2019s quite proper question.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local irritation over immigration is on such a scale that it could impact upon this highly-marginal seat.<\/p>\n

The town, which was a cotton boomtown of the Industrial Revolution, and the birthplace of the Co-operative Movement, has long veered between Labour and the Liberal Democrats.<\/p>\n

For two decades the seat was held by the larger-than-life Liberal MP \u2013 reportedly at 29 stone 12 pounds the heaviest British MP ever \u2013 Cyril Smith. In the early years of New Labour it was occupied by Lorna Fitzsimons, designated a Blair Babe, but she lost the seat to the Lib Dems in 2005.<\/p>\n

It could easily have gone Labour\u2019s way this time. The incumbent, Lib Dem, Paul Rowen, came in for a deal of criticism in the MPs\u2019 expenses scandal. \u201cHe\u2019s about as useful as a chocolate fire guard,\u201d one local man opined.<\/p>\n

Now Gordon Brown has thrown him a lifeline. Bigot-gate, Mr Rowen delightedly proclaimed yesterday, was \u201cthe beginning of the end\u201d for Mr Brown.<\/p>\n

His party leader, Nick Clegg, even took time out from his leadership debate preparations to send a special message to Rochdale voters announcing that the first Cleggs had apparently come from nearby Littleborough in the 12th century which made him \u201cin a sense\u201d a local himself.<\/p>\n

But immigration is not an easy call for Mr Clegg. \u201cAt least Brown only insulted one Rochdale lass,\u201d one local blogger complained, but Nick Clegg \u201cinsults all hard-working honest people by offering an amnesty to all illegal immigrants.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStop being used as voting fodder by the old-gang parties,\u201d another denizen of the webworld pronounced. \u201cVote BNP\u201d.<\/p>\n

The outcome is as hard to read here as elsewhere. There are some who are impatient with all the scapegoating of immigrants. Economic migrants from the EU came to do jobs that the workshy benefits-dependent class refused to do, said Charles De Mar of Lower Fold in Rochdale. \u201cWhy were our home grown boys and girls not doing them? I\u2019d love to know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGordon Brown was right to call this woman a bigot. He\u2019s got my vote now,\u201d said another. \u201cHe\u2019s gone up in my estimation,\u201d agreed a third.<\/p>\n

Why was Mrs Duffy, who was so keen to exercise her right to free speech in public, so shocked when the PM exercises his in private, asked Dave Kinkladze.\u00a0 He should have stood by his comments, said another local.<\/p>\n

But the largest number of the local electorate have other instincts. At the last election 40 per cent of the town simply didn\u2019t bother to vote \u2013 one of the biggest percentages anywhere in the UK.\u00a0 Their number may grow this time. And Gillian Duffy, until now a lifelong Labour supporter, may well join them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
